Skylights (ebook)
Skylights begins in the immediate aftermath of Stargazers, the worldwide phenomenon in which people emerge from their homes to stare at the night sky. By the morning, they are changed. Some rage. Some kill. Some mass into herds and walk in a slow moving tide. War veteran Henry and his daughter, Penny, escape Judith, wife & mother turned Stargazer. They take refuge in a motel outside the city, along with the recently widowed Jean.
When Judith reappears with the same murderous intent, Jean provides the distraction Henry and Penny need to escape.
Hours later, Judith lies in the street, hand a cold claw grasping asphalt, the scent of her daughter fading on the wind as she takes her last breath. Jean gazes westward, smoke still trickling from the barrel of her gun. She must find Henry and Penny. For them if not for her. On the way, she acquires new companions in Michael, who followed his Stargazer mother for days, and Gunny the Great Pyrenees, liberated from the prison of his backyard. Beyond the walls of their new trailer home they hear the rumble of engines. There are distant headlights at night. There are lights in the sky.
They are not alone.
Miles away, Henry and Penny watch the same sky and hope those headlights might belong to Jean.
