Prioritization of BIPOC Stories

Prior to launching Sobelo Books, our dreaming phase of what Sobelo could become included the platforming of diverse voices. Like many other indie horror presses, our intentions were and are to amplify BIPOC stories. So, to clarify our stance on submissions: BIPOC authors may submit novella to novel-length horror, dark and speculative manuscripts to Sobelo Books at any time, agented or unagented.

Now for the nuance …

BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous and People of Color - If you are Black, Indigenous, or not the majority ethnic group in the United States, we want your stories.

In your submission, include BIPOC in the subject line and follow all other requirements listed below. Please send to both:

L.P. Hernandez: Les@sobelobooks.com
L.C. Marino: Lucas@sobelobooks.com

From L.P.: As a BIPOC author myself, I feel the tension of writing stories in this genre and industry. We have wonderful flag-bearers leading our genre from BIPOC communities, but there is a gap between those authors and the indies. I have wondered if my name disqualified me from opportunities, watching racism emerge from light-starved depths to shine on the surface of our horror publishing community. And, I have seen other indie horror presses launch initiatives like this only to publish white authors at a rate higher than their share of the percentage of the population. We are not checking a box. We are asking for your stories.
